Kewyn George, Convenor, CII Tamil Nadu GCC Taskforce, on Tuesday advocated the need for the emergence of an anchor to showcase the immense potential of Tiruchi to usher in a global capacity centre (GCC) here.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a conference on the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in manufacturing and industrial growth as part of the CII Tiruchi Connect-3rd Edition, here, he said that Tiruchi had a great infrastructure in terms of qualified professionals, road, rail and air connectivity. It had been a centre known for manufacturing and fabrication. It had a great potential to build office spaces. However, it had not emerged as a global capability centre. “I am of the strong view that it can be a global capacity centre. But, someone from Tiruchi, who was born and brought up here, should emerge as an anchor to create an ecosystem for the establishment of global capability centre in Tiruchi,” said Mr. George.

He said that there were no noticeable signs of GCC in Hyderabad and Bengaluru till 15 years to 20 years ago. They now had a number of GCCs. Chennai and Coimbatore had a number of GCCs. They had a number of technology centres thanks to the emergence of a few individuals who showcased the potential of the cities. “If a global company sets up a technology centre, it will create high-tech jobs. It will lead to improve the livelihood of the people,” Mr. George said.

Establishing GCC, he said it would create more job opportunities. If one job was created, it would lead to the creation of ancillary jobs here and there. This is how the ecosystem would develop. Coimbatore was the best model for creating GCCs. It was flourishing. Investments were poured in and industrial captains wanted to make use of the GCCs to move forward the agenda of growth. It was all about creating a perception.

Sivaramakrishnan, Chairman, CII Tiruchi Zone, Ajay Jayaraj, former Chairman, Leo Ananth, Chairman, CII Connect Tiruchi, Antony Adaikalam, Co-Convenor, IT-ITEL panel, and S. Anand, Vice Chairman, CII Tiruchi Zone, spoke.
