The State government will soon get a major boost to its efforts to promote digital governance offering a variety of services across departments online.

The State government is learnt to have received in principle approval from the World Bank for assisting the digital governance project. The bank, according to senior officials, has evinced keenness in extending assistance of US $ 217 million (approximately ₹2,000 crore) to the State government for promoting digital governance to ensure transparency in providing services to the people.

Senior officials said the project involves provision of a range of services as well as setting up an exclusive data centre. “It is basically aimed at complete digital transformation of the State,” a senior official told The Hindu. The State government has already uploaded the preliminary project report pertaining to the plans for extension of digital services to a wide array of fields.

The process would involve submission of a detailed project report of the methodology that will be adopted by the government for ensuring penetration of digital services to grass root level. The DPR would be to the Union Finance Ministry’s Department of Economic Affairs seeking its approval for obtaining external funding.

“We will go for invitation of request for proposals, floating tenders and execution of works once the DEA gives its concurrence to the project,” the official said. The development follows the State government’s recent decision to constitute a committee to strengthen digital governance for improving efficiency and service delivery of different departments. A World Bank team led by the bank’s regional practice director for digital and AI Mahesh Uttamchandani conferred with the government’s delegation headed by Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju and discussed about various aspects like creation of basic infrastructure for new data centres in Bharat Future City, Artificial Intelligence, cyber security and digital public infrastructure.

Appreciating the conducive policy environment in Telangana for extending digital services to people, the bank’s team has asked the government to prepare a comprehensive plan so that the World Bank could extend its cooperation in the sector.
