The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday staged a protest against what it described as the “unscientific” canal construction being carried out on Kuruppam Road, one of the busiest roads in Thrissur city. They placed a wreath on the canal.

Inaugurating the protest, Raghunath C. Menon, BJP mandalam president and leader of the BJP parliamentary party in the Thrissur Corporation Council, alleged that the previous Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) council had kept Kuruppam Road and Koorkenchery Road closed for more than six months in the name of construction, despite strong objections from BJP councillors.

He claimed that the present UDF council had ignored those concerns and was now spending nearly ₹2 crore to construct concrete slabs over the canals, resulting in what he termed a “distorted model of development” that was causing inconvenience to traders and the public.

Mr. Menon warned that if the Corporation continued with what he called unscientific development works, the BJP would lead stronger public protests in association with traders, industrialists and local residents. The BJP alleged that the project would adversely affect businesses and public convenience.
