The Chennai Open is set to be held for a second successive year after the Tamil Nadu Government on Tuesday announced a financial support of ₹10 crore for the WTA 250 tournament.

The announcement removes the uncertainty surrounding the event’s return. In June, Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA) president Vijay Amritraj had held discussions with Sports Minister Aadhav Arjuna and officials of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT).

Amritraj had estimated the overall cost of staging the event at approximately ₹20 crore and proposed a 50-50 partnership.

Under that model, the State would provide ₹10 crore, with the other half raised through sponsorships, commercial partnerships and tournament revenue.

Tuesday’s commitment meets the Government component sought by the TNTA and gives the organisers the financial base to proceed with the third edition of the tournament.

The announcement was made after Amritraj and a TNTA delegation met Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at the Secretariat on Tuesday. The government said the TNTA and SDAT would jointly conduct the tournament at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Nungambakkam in November.

The WTA has scheduled the Chennai Open from November 2 to 8 as part of its Asian swing.

The outdoor hard-court tournament will have a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles field, with a total financial commitment of $283,347. The player line-up and Indian wildcards will be announced closer to the competition.

The Chennai Open was last held from October 27 to November 2, 2025, when WTA Tour action returned to the city after a three-year gap.
