Two persons from Haryana was arrested by Kalavai police on Tuesday in connection with a robbery of ₹7 lakh from a private bank’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM) on the Cuddalore-Chittoor Road (NH 38) at Mulluvadi village near Arcot town in the district.
The police said that the arrested persons were identified as R. Sanjay, 25, and N. Rubin, 24. They are natives of Ferozepur Jhirka in Haryana. They were among the six-member gang that were reportedly involved in the heist. “Special teams were camped in Haryana to nab other members of the gang. The entire stolen cash will be recovered soon,” said S. Kannagaraj, Deputy SP, Ranipet.
The police said that it was on July 15 when bank officials noticed that there were no withdrawals from the ATM prompting a team of bank officials to visit the outlet. They found the shutter closed from the outside. On gaining access, they discovered that the ATM had been forcibly damaged and cash stolen.
Based on orders of Superintendent of Police (SP) P. Sibin, special teams were formed. CCTV camera footage was analysed. The gang had used an SUV with fake number plates. The team had intercepted the duo in the village in Haryana and were brought to Ranipet.
The duo was lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is under way.
