SEOUL -- President Lee Jae Myung said Wednesday the Army academy has been behind all military coups in South Korea, while remaining largely unaccountable, calling for the swift integration of military academies to reduce the risk of another coup.

The president made the remarks while receiving policy briefings from the foreign, unification and defense ministries, as the government seeks to unify the academies of the Army, Navy and Air Force into a single institution.

■ Supreme Court's full bench to rule on ex-PM, ex-interior minister's insurrection charges

SEOUL -- The Supreme Court said Wednesday its full bench will rule on the insurrection trials of former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and former Interior Minister Lee Sang-min, citing the gravity of the cases.

The two have been standing trial separately at the top court on charges of playing a key role in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's brief imposition of martial law in December 2024.

■ Seoul shares spike 3.5 pct on eased woes over Strait of Hormuz, AI

SEOUL -- Seoul shares soared by more than 3.5 percent Wednesday as easing concerns over the profitability of artificial intelligence (AI) investments and hopes for an interim agreement between the United States and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz boosted investor sentiment.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) soared 3.76 percent, or 239.31 points, to close at 6,598.26, after reaching an intraday high of 6,674.66.

■ 10 baseball games canceled due to extreme heat

SEOUL -- All 10 professional baseball games scheduled for the next two evenings have been canceled due to extreme heat that has gripped the nation.

The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) announced that the five games slated for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and five more set for the same time Thursday will not be played as scheduled, as it mulls changes to rules guiding games played in severe heat.

■ (LEAD) Unification minister calls for end to 'main enemy' term for N. Korea

SEOUL -- Unification Minister Chung Dong-young on Wednesday proposed dropping the "main enemy" label for North Korea and referring to it by the name it calls itself, as part of efforts to seek peaceful coexistence with Pyongyang.

Chung made the proposal at a briefing at Cheong Wa Dae on his ministry's key policy agenda for the second half of the year.
