Former Green MP Mike Morrice announces he's running to be party's next leader

Morrice lost his seat in Kitchener Centre in April 2025 to Conservative Kelly DeRidder

Former Green MP Mike Morrice says he's one of two approved candidates for his party's leadership.

Morrice announced Wednesday morning he has entered the race.

Prospective candidates had until July 17 to apply. The other candidate is expected to be announced on Wednesday.

Morrice served for one term as the MP for the Ontario riding of Kitchener Centre but lost his seat in the April 2025 federal election. Conservative Kelly DeRidder beat Morrice by 358 votes.

On November 28, 2025, Morrice was named deputy leader of the federal Greens and has already been declared the Green candidate for the next federal election, whenever it will be held.

Morrice is scheduled to hold a media briefing Wednesday morning in Kitchener.

The Green Party of Canada officially launched its five-month leadership race on June 11.

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May announced in the summer of 2025 she planned to step down but will remain on as leader until November.

Voting for the next Green Party of Canada leader will take place from Nov. 2 to 13 using a ranked ballot. Results are expected to be announced on Nov. 14.
