Man arrested for dangerous driving as woman jumps clear of swerving van

Video of near miss outside Temple Mall North in Wong Tai Sin prompts Hong Kong police to apprehend 37-year-old driver

Hong Kong police have arrested a man on suspicion of dangerous driving after a video went viral showing his van swerving dangerously close to a woman.

A police spokesman confirmed that officers arrested a 37-year-old man on Wednesday and remains in custody.

The widely circulated video shows a van swerving at high speed, passing close to the female cleaner who was about to cross the road. The vehicle did not hit the woman, but she was forced to jump out of the way.

A source said the incident happened on Monday outside the car park of Temple Mall North in Wong Tai Sin. Officers investigating the case on Wednesday afternoon tracked down the driver, the source added.

“Upon questioning, the man had admitted that he was driving the white light van at the time of the incident,” the source said.

The van has been seized for investigation and Kowloon East’s traffic accident investigation team is continuing its inquiries.

Under Hong Kong law, the maximum penalty for dangerous driving is three years’ imprisonment and disqualification.
