Visayas under red alert, faces possible brownouts

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) has placed the Visayas grid under red alert due to thin power supply in the region caused by coal plant outages and the tripping of two transmission lines.

In an advisory late Wednesday, the NGCP said the red alert would be in effect from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The grid operator will place the Visayas grid under yellow alert from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

NGCP attributed the alerts on outages at major coal-fired power plants in the Visayas and the tripping of the Daanglungsod-CalongCalong 138-kV L1 and Daanglungsod-Magdugo 138-kV L1 transmission lines.

Both transmission lines resumed operations at 4:17 p.m., restoring connections to the affected power facilities.

A yellow alert indicates that available power reserves are thinning, meaning any unexpected plant outage could trigger service interruptions. A red alert means power supply is insufficient to meet demand, increasing the risk of rotational brownouts unless demand is curtailed. /pai INQ
