The intensity of rain has significantly subsided in Kerala with the weakening of the active monsoon conditions. However, heavy rainfall is likely to continue in parts of the State for a couple of more days, influenced by the cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal.

An orange alert has been issued for seven districts – Kasaragod, Kannur, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha – on Thursday, warning of very heavy rain. The other seven districts have been placed under a yellow alert for isolated heavy rain.

According to a weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the heavy and isolated heavy rainfall activity will continue in parts of the State for a few more days under the combined influence of the upper air cyclonic circulations that persist over South Interior Karnataka and neighbourhood; south coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry; and over Southeast Bay of Bengal.

No extreme heavy or very heavy category rain was reported anywhere in Kerala during the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday (August 5). Panathur in Kasargod recorded the highest rainfall of 9 cm during this period, followed by Thodupuzha and Udumbannoor in Idukki and Muliyar in Kasargod with 7 cm each. Meanwhile, swell waves with 1.2-1.4 m height are forecasted until Thursday night at various parts of the State including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha coast. As there is a possibility of surging of waves during this period, fishermen are advised to operate boats with utmost vigilance, and recreation activities have to be done with due care.
