Which one do you actually want?
This year is a weird one. Samsung not only introduced a new book-style foldable, but it slid it into a spot that’s actually cheaper than last year’s release. But, for a little more money, you can get a phone Samsung has deemed worthy of the “Ultra” title.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 gets no such partner in crime this time, as Samsung seems to have rid itself of the FE option.
So, which one is the right one for you?

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is easy to recommend for users who want the foldable experience, but don’t find themselves desperate for a high-powered camera loadout. The smaller main display poses a different experience, one that might be a little more comfortable for you to use, especially if you aren’t a power user of the internal display.
The power users should consider the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra instead. The outer display is a little narrower, but the internal screen gives you more vertical space to spread out multiple apps at once. With that and One UI 9’s multitasking tools, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra becomes the go-to choice for those who want a little extra power.
The 200MP main camera, 50MP ultra-wide, and telephoto lens don’t hurt, either.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is a good option, too, but it doesn’t get the same sort of screen real estate as the other two phones have. This year, Samsung upped the external display’s ability to handle apps like the internal display – a sore spot for some time.
Where to pre-order for the best deal
This year, Samsung and a few retailers are offering the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series and Galaxy Z Flip 8 for great discounts during the pre-order period.
Even though the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is a little more expensive than the previous model – $2,099 instead of $1,999 – the company is actually upping the amount it will let you trade a device in for to $1,200 off. That extra return offsets the price increase. At least, a little bit.
Samsung’s trade-in offers seem to be normal this year. For the Galaxy S26 Ultra, users will get $1,200 back for their Galaxy Z Fold 8 purchase. Trading in a Galaxy Z Fold 7 will result in the same deal. Things start to thin out when going back a generation or two, or trading in something like the Galaxy S26+. Those will get you around $700 back.
For those who don’t want to trade anything in and get a no-frills discount, Samsung is offering a $200 credit. It looks like that credit goes towards anything you get from Samsung’s website.
Best Buy’s per-order offerings for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series and Flip 8 echo Samsung, but there’s no immediate credit for the phone available unless you trade something in. Without a trade-in, Best Buy customers get a $200 gift card. This is similar to the credit Samsung gives its customers on its website.
You can trade a device in at Best Buy. The website, again, echoes Samsung’s $1,200 trade-in ceiling. That’s for some of Samsung’s flagship phones, as mentioned above.
Choosing Best Buy over Samsung’s website simply comes down to whether or not you want to spend your $200 credit on proprietary accessories.
Amazon might actually offer the best deal for users who don’t want to trade another phone in. Instead of a $200 gift card, the pre-order purchase of a Galaxy Z Fold 8 or Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra comes with a $350 or $400 gift card.
Amazon also notes users can trade their devices in for an extra $300 gift card, but I wouldn’t go that route for a phone you can get more for somewhere else.
If you’re sticking with a carrier
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 cost $30/month for 48 months when users sign up for the Simplicity Plan, and that doesn’t require a trade-in to apply. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra costs slightly more at $35/month for 48 months. Users can sign up for a new plan or upgrade to the Simplicity Plan for the discount to take effect.
AT\&T is offering the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra for $0/month, but a trade-in is required. Without something to offer, the devices cost $52/month and $58/month, respectively. Both of those discounts have some extra plan requirements.
T-Mobile users who want to hop on a new plan like the Experience Beyond plan can get devices heavily discounted with a trade-in. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 comes to $0/month while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra still costs something, at $8.33/month.
Samsung generally tops the list for the best deal. Trade-in estimates are usually higher, and Samsung credit isn’t too shabby. It’s no Amazon, though, which is offering $350 gift cards with the purchase of a Galaxy Z Fold 8 or Fold 8 Ultra. The Galaxy Z Flip 8 comes with a $200 Amazon gift card.
