Wellington City councillors to submit super-region proposal to government
Wellington City councillors have unanimously agreed to submit a super-region proposal to government this weekend
Regional mayors will tomorrow decide on the exact model - which could see a Wellington-Wairarapa unitary council - merging eight councils together.
Through an amendment, Wellington councillors agreed to signal a preference for Wairarapa to be excluded, and for the Hutt Valley, Porirua, and Wellington City to merge.
An amendment to exclude Upper Hutt from the model failed.
Mayor Andrew Little said Wellington needed a bigger platform to advocate for the region, and today's decision was about future generations, not the politics of today.
