SEOUL, Aug. 6 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean won extended its gains against the U.S. dollar Thursday after hitting an intraday 10-month high amid falling oil prices, with traders remaining watchful over signs of U.S. interventions for the Japanese yen.

The won was quoted at 1,423.8 won per dollar at 3:30 p.m., up 0.7 won from the close of stock trading the day before.

The won opened at 1,423 won per dollar and rose to as high as 1,414.5 won in morning trading, marking the strongest level since Oct. 2 last year.

Global oil prices fell as Iran reportedly agreed with Oman on a route that would help restore shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

The won's appreciation has been also supported since the United States and Japan confirmed their joint market intervention last week.

Foreigners sold a net 3.3 trillion won (US$2.3 billion) worth of local stocks during the latest trading session, with the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index tumbling 4.58 percent to close at 6,296.38.
