Several parts of Ernakulam received heavy rainfall on Thursday (August 6, 2026) after a brief lull in the weather situation on Wednesday (August 5, 2026).

The district received intense showers from the morning as the India Meteorological department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the day, warning of very heavy rain.

According to the weather bulletin issued by the agency, heavy rainfall is likely to continue in parts of the State for a couple of days more, influenced by the cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal.

The automatic weather stations at Koothattukulam and Choondy near Aluva recorded rainfall of 3 cm each, while the Kochi airport area received a rainfall of 2 cm. A yellow alert has been issued for the district for Friday (August 7, 2026), it said.

A review meeting convened by Anwar Sadath, Aluva MLA, assessed the emergency preparedness and response systems available in the region in the wake of heavy to very heavy rain. He said the required measures had been strengthened as part of the exercise. Coordination among various departments and agencies has been stepped up considering lessons learnt from the massive floods in 2018, he said in a communication.

Officials have been told to identify the locations/venues for opening relief camps, if required. Police, Revenue and Irrigation departments are coordinating the efforts, he said. The meeting entrusted the Irrigation department to ensure proper water flow in rivers and canals. Trees posing danger to the safety of the public have to be axed as part of preparatory measures, according to the release.
