8 Filipino teachers safe after Thailand school shooting – PH embassy

MANILA, Philippines — Eight Filipino teachers at Debsirin School Nonthaburi in Thailand are safe and uninjured after a school shooting that killed seven people and injured scores on Friday, the Philippine Embassy in Thailand said.

The embassy said all eight registered Filipino teachers at the school “are safe, accounted for, and uninjured.”

“The Philippine Embassy extends its deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, as well as to the entire school community and the Thai government following the tragic school shooting incident at Debsirin School Nonthaburi,” it said.

“The Philippine Embassy likewise prays for the speedy and full recovery of those who were injured. The Philippines stands in solidarity with Thailand during this time of grief,” it added.

The embassy said it continues to monitor the situation and is on standby to provide any necessary assistance.

The shooting happened at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province, which borders Bangkok.

Thai police said the 14-year-old suspect first shot dead his grandparents using his grandfather’s handgun before going to the school, where he killed five staff members.

The suspect also died, while more than 30 people were injured, around nine of them critically, according to Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

Police said the suspect had been under stress related to his schooling and appeared to have planned the attack. /dm
