Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inspected a section of a bridge vandalised along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway at Vin-Niger in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, assuring residents that the damage did not affect the structural stability of the facility.

Sanwo-Olu conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the affected bridge pole on Saturday and confirmed that the ongoing construction work remained intact despite the incident.

According to the governor, the vandals excavated portions of the structure and removed fittings used to secure the bridge. He condemned the act, describing it as an unacceptable attack on public infrastructure.

Sanwo-Olu vowed that the government would identify and prosecute those responsible, including individuals involved in receiving, buying or selling materials stolen from public facilities.

He maintained that anyone found culpable would face the law regardless of their social status or background.

The governor described the continued destruction of government infrastructure as particularly disturbing given the huge resources being invested by his administration in the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of roads and other public facilities across the state.

He also expressed concern over similar acts of vandalism in Festac Town, where drainage slabs had reportedly been destroyed and iron rods removed along Second and Seventh Avenues.

Sanwo-Olu called on residents to take greater responsibility for protecting public assets by reporting suspicious activities to security agencies and relevant authorities.

“When you see something, you should say something. Government is not going to be there 24/7. People should know that they also have a responsibility for themselves and for the government to speak out,” he said.

The governor commended personnel of the Lagos State Police Command, Rapid Response Squad, Lagos State Neighbourhood Watch and members of the Kick Against Indiscipline initiative for their swift response to the incident.

He said the inspection was part of broader efforts by his administration to restore order along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, safeguard government infrastructure and improve safety and the general condition of the corridor.

During engagements with residents, traders and commuters in Alaba Rago and Orile, Sanwo-Olu noted that significant progress had been recorded in the ongoing efforts to clear, reorganise and improve the corridor.

He assured motorists, commuters, traders and other road users that the government would continue to protect public facilities and implement measures aimed at improving safety and accessibility along the route.

The governor also pledged continued cooperation with security agencies to tackle vandalism, maintain law and order and provide a safer environment for residents across the state.
