Gardai have used non-lethal force to detain a man armed with a knife in Co. Louth.

At 9.30 pm, a man was armed with a knife at an open car park in Dundalk.

Gardaí engaged with the man to try and de-escalate the situation and directed him to drop the knife.

The man did not comply, and gardaí from the Armed Support Unit discharged one round from a 40mm less-lethal force option.

As a result of this intervention, gardaí were able to disarm the male.

The man has been arrested and is currently detained at Dundalk Garda station.
