SEOUL, Aug. 10 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Group said Monday it will kick off a robot demonstration project at an apartment complex west of Seoul as part of its effort to develop a smart parking management system.

Hyundai Motor Co., auto parts affiliate Hyundai Wia Co. and Hyundai Engineering & Construction (E&C) Co. will form a consortium for the project at Hillstate The Wave City in Siheung, southwest of Seoul, as part of the government's smart city regulatory sandbox program.

Two sets of Hyundai Wia's parking robots will be deployed on the first basement level of the parking garage at the 1,796-household apartment complex built by Hyundai E&C, which is scheduled to accommodate residents next year.

The slim robots, each measuring just 110 millimeters in height, are designed to move underneath a vehicle, lift its wheels and transport it to a designated parking space. Equipped with LiDAR sensors, they can automatically park vehicles weighing up to 3.4 tons, including sport utility vehicles (SUVs), at speeds of up to 1.2 meters per second.

Hyundai Motor Group said the project is aimed at addressing parking space shortages at residential complexes and improving safety through the use of robotic technology.
