Add as a favourite source on Google Add DutchNews as a favourite source on GoogleThieves broke into a police station in The Hague to try to retrieve a batch of illegal cigarettes that were seized in a raid on Friday.

Four suspects were arrested when they were caught while trying to throw boxes of cigarettes over the fence of the police compound on Zichtenburglaan at 4.45am on Saturday.

One of the boxes caught on the fence and burst open, scattering cigarettes over the ground just as officers arrived on the scene.

The suspects tried to escape by car, but were forced off the road and arrested within 15 minutes later. One man was injured and taken to hospital under a police escort.

The haul of 1.2 million cigarettes was confiscated on Mandelastraat in Delft on Friday. Earlier in the week police recovered 500,000 iillegal cigarettes in two vans in the town.

Officers are investigating whether the break-in at the police station is linked to the earlier raids in Delft.
