Red, yellow alerts persist over Visayas, Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines — The Visayas and Mindanao grids continue to grapple with tight electricity supply on Tuesday as rising demand and outages at large coal plants threaten power interruptions.

In an advisory, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) has placed the Visayas under red alert for four hours, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A yellow alert will also be in effect from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Mindanao, which also exports power to the Visayas, would also be under yellow alert from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A red alert happens when the power supply cannot meet the demand, which increases the risk of rotational brownouts unless someone curtails the demand.

In a yellow alert, the power supply can still meet demand, but serves as a warning that when a plant breaks down, it will result in brownouts. /pai
