The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) will start procuring beer and India Made Foreign Spirits (IMFS) Ordinary equally from all the suppliers in the State. Earlier, liquor was procured from select manufacturers depending on which party was in power. The State has 11 distilleries and six breweries. IMFS Ordinary includes brandy and rum.

This will also be piloted at Elite Shops in seven locations including Chennai Central, South and North; Coimbatore North and South and Madurai North and South. For malls located in these locations atleast one case of every brand under the premium category shall invariably be supplied.

Officials said the board of TASMAC in its board meeting held on June 6, 2026 reviewed the existing system of indent generation and resolved that in order to ensure a more rational and equitable supply of stocks, indents shall henceforth be generated based on the sales data of Retail Vending (RV) shops instead of the existing formula adopted for depots.

Those tracking the liquor industry say this tipplers would be left with little options is this methodology is followed. “We should give what customers want. You can’t say that stock is over so you drink what you want,” an industry watcher said.
