PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur – The Philippine Army’s 1st Infantry (TABAK) Division (1ID) has intensified its support for law enforcement agencies in the campaign against cigarette smuggling across Western Mindanao, resulting in the seizure of at least P59 million worth of contraband and the apprehension of 27 suspects since the first quarter of 2026.

Major Gen. Yegor Rey Barroquillo Jr., 1ID commander, said the operations highlight the army’s expanded role in safeguarding national security by dismantling smuggling networks that fuel criminal activities and deprive the government of vital revenues.

Joint checkpoint operations, intelligence-driven interdictions, and coordinated law enforcement efforts were conducted in partnership with the Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Customs (BOC), and other government agencies, he said.

These efforts disrupted illicit trade routes and reinforced the government’s campaign against economic sabotage, he added.

Barroquillo emphasized that the campaign complements the division’s mission of internal security and territorial defense.

“Our collaboration with the PNP, Bureau of Customs, and partner agencies reflects our commitment to relentlessly pursue smugglers and safeguard peace, security, and economic stability throughout Western Mindanao,” he said.

He urged the public to report illegal activities, stressing that community vigilance is vital in sustaining the fight against smuggling.
