Musician Makoy Portado’s death mourned by KZ Tandingan, TJ Monterde, John Prats

Several celebrities including KZ Tandingan, TJ Monterde and John Prats expressed grief over the passing of their longtime collaborator, musician Makoy Portado.

The death of Portado, a guitarist who had performed at several celebrity concerts, was confirmed by Cornerstone Entertainment through its Instagram page on Tuesday, Aug. 11. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed to the public.

“Rest in Peace, Makoy Portado. We have had the pleasure of working with you through countless shows and musical projects over the years. And those closest to you can attest to the fact that more than being a talented musician, you were also a good friend,” the caption reads.

Tandingan paid tribute to Portado, recalling how they moved to Manila 15 years ago for their dreams.

“Before everything became what it is now, there was that tiny condo. Those long nights. Those little gigs that felt like the biggest thing in the world. And you were there. You were there from the beginning,” she recounted.

“Kuya Makoy, I honestly don’t know what to say,” she said. “I don’t know how to imagine the band without you. I don’t know how we’re supposed to play those songs without looking for you. So I’ll just say thank you. Thank you for the music. For the memories. For the laughter, the long nights, the gigs, and for sharing so much of your life with us.”

She also credited Portado as a main part of her and her husband’s support system.

“This goodbye is painful, but I’ll take comfort in knowing that you are HOME now,” she stated. “Rest well, Kuya Makoy. We’ll take it from here, and we’ll keep playing for you.”

Monterde looked back on the late musician as one of the first people who believed in his music.

“You will always be a part of me. Wherever this may take me,” Monterde vowed. “Our future kids will definitely grow up knowing ‘Uncle Makoy.’ A friend for life. A true blessing.”

Prats, for his part, lamented Portado’s absence in their next gig.

“Hindi ko alam kung paano kami sa next na gig. Kung paano sa band intro. Sobrang bigat. Mamimiss kita, Makoy. Rest easy, brother,” he wrote.

Other celebrities who remembered the late musician and offered their prayers were Matteo Guidicelli, Martin Nievera, Anne Curtis and Angeline Quinto.
