SEOUL, Aug. 12 (Yonhap) -- Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and his Venezuelan counterpart, Felix Plasencia, held phone talks Wednesday and discussed ways to enhance cooperation, Seoul's foreign ministry said.

During the call, Cho expressed condolences to the victims of recent earthquakes in Venezuela and pledged to support the country's recovery efforts.

Venezuela suffered a pair of powerful earthquakes in June that killed more than 6,000 people.

The two ministers also discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including the economy, and agreed to activate communication channels to deepen future discussions.

Cho asked the Venezuelan government to help ensure the safety of South Korean nationals living in the country, the ministry said.
