The Mumbai Police have registered three separate cases against more than 50 protesters in connection with a solidarity demonstration held at Chaityabhoomi in Dadar after the police in Delhi stopped the Cockroach Janta Party’s march to Parliament with tear gas and a lathi-charge, ANI reported.

The cases in Mumbai have been registered at the Mahim and Shivaji Park police stations against the organisers and more than 50 protesters under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Maharashtra Police Act, IANS reported.

The police said the protest was held without permission and that orders prohibiting gatherings were in force at the time.

Notably, the Mumbai Police has also issued orders prohibiting public gatherings of five or more persons without permission across the city starting from Thursday till August 6.

Some students who had earlier been detained have since been issued notices to join the investigation, IANS quoted the Mumbai Police as saying.

The Delhi protest in Monday coincided with the start of the Monsoon Session. It was organised to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for the alleged mismanagement of competitive examinations.

While the police stopped the protest leaders from proceeding, some demonstrators moved closer to Parliament and gathered at other locations in central Delhi. Security personnel later fired tear gas shells at and lathi-charged protesters during the demonstration, Scroll reported.

Following the police action, supporters gathered at various locations across the country, including at Chaityabhoomi in Mumbai.

The Mumbai Police detained several persons, including students, from Chaityabhoomi, Dadar railway station, Shivaji Park and Mahim to prevent large gatherings.

Participants alleged that police detained peaceful protesters.

Sameer Wagle, a member of the civil society initiative Mumbai for Peace, told Scroll that he had only been filming the protest, and was not taking part in it, when he was detained and taken to Mahim police station with other detainees.

Theatre artist Dhammrakshit Randive said he was briefly detained before later joining the protest for about an hour and was detained again before being released.

“We were not assaulted but others were,” he told Scroll, adding that he and his friends had shot videos of police assault on their phones.

On Tuesday, heavy police deployment remained in place at various locations in Mumbai including Azad Maidan, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters after further protests were announced in support of the demonstration in Delhi, Mid day reported.
