Expressing serious concern, the Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative Limited (CAMPCO Ltd.), Mangaluru, said on Tuesday that it has received information that sub-standard imported arecanut is finding its way into the domestic market threatening the stability of local market.

Sub-standard arecanut is reportedly being mixed with locally produced arecanut before being sold. Such practices have the potential to adversely affect the quality, reputation and market value of Indian arecanut, its president S. R. Satishchandra said.

“CAMPCO has received information indicating that sub-standard imported arecanut is being locally blended with domestically produced arecanut and supplied through local trade channels. As a result, the market is gradually being flooded with mixed-quality produce, causing concern among genuine arecanut growers and consumers alike. This may push the arecanut market prices down to an unfavourable level,” he said.

This trend poses a serious threat to the livelihood of lakhs of domestic arecanut farmers who have consistently produced quality produce through hard work and sustainable farming practices, he said.

Appeal to growers

“CAMPCO appeals to all arecanut growers to remain alert and exercise utmost caution while marketing their produce. Growers are advised to sell their produce only through reliable and reputed agencies and to refrain from dealing with parties who may indulge in mixing imported sub-standard arecanut with domestic produce for commercial gain,” he said.

The cooperation of farmers, traders and all stakeholders is essential to preserve the integrity and reputation of Indian arecanut. “Protecting the domestic arecanut sector is a collective responsibility, and every stakeholder has an important role to play in ensuring that only genuine, quality produce reaches the market,” the president said.

CAMPCO reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the interests of arecanut growers and will continue to work with the concerned authorities to protect the domestic arecanut industry from unfair trade practices and to ensure a fair and remunerative market for Indian farmers, he said.
