The Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) M.R. Ajith Kumar on Tuesday submitted his explanation to the State Police Chief regarding allegations that he attempted to interfere with the investigation into the assault on Youth Congress workers by former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s security detail in Alappuzha in 2023.
The senior officer has reportedly denied all assessments made against him by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that probed the incident and is handling the case. Two grade sub-inspectors, who were questioned by the SIT in connection with the assault on the Youth Congress workers, had earlier alleged that Mr. Kumar instructed the investigators to hand over the case diary for review and directed them to prepare reports in order to close the case before it was presented in court.
The State Police Chief, who is presently examining the ADGP’s explanation, will later forward the document along with the SIT’s report to the Home Secretary. The Home department will then decide on the next course of action.
The developments come ahead of the retirement of the Director General of the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services Nitin Agrawal on July 31. With a Director General of Police (DGP) post consequently set to fall vacant, Mr. Kumar is next in line for promotion to the rank. However, any disciplinary action adopted by the Home department in connection with the Youth Congress activists’ case could put paid to any such plans.
