The Traffic Police have booked 22 bus and lorry drivers on charges of overspeeding and dangerous driving in Puducherry.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Traffic, D. Divya in a release said a special enforcement drive was conducted to check overspeeding by heavy vehicles. The drive was conducted with a focus on preventing road accidents and ensuring safety of all road users, she said.

“During the last 15 days, 22 FIRs have been registered against bus and lorry drivers under section 281 of BNS read with Section 184 of MV Act, 1988 for overspeeding and dangerous driving. We will continue the drive to check traffic rule violations by heavy vehicles, including buses and lorries. Strict legal action will be taken against violators in the interest of road users and their safety and for prevention of road accidents,” the SSP said.

The Traffic Police recently held a meeting with Bus Operators/Owners Association as part of implementing traffic rules. The representatives of the association and drivers were advised to strictly adhere to prescribed speed limits, avoid overspeeding and rash driving. They were directed to follow traffic rules and regulations, the release said.

“The association members were advised to ensure that the drivers exercise utmost caution while operating heavy vehicles. Strict legal action will be taken against violators,” the release said.
