With private healthcare becoming increasingly expensive, the Telangana government has developed the Marri Channa Reddy Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (MCR TIMS) as a corporate-level healthcare institution to provide quality medical care to the poor, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said after inaugurating the 1,082-bed facility at Sanathnagar in Hyderabad on Monday.

Mr. Reddy said the government had spent ₹2,700 crore on the Rajiv Aarogyasri scheme and ₹2,526 crore through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund since assuming office in December 2023. It had also spent ₹21,800 crore on the Medical and Health Department over the past two years.

The Osmania General Hospital, NIMS expansion, and TIMS hospitals at L.B. Nagar and Alwal, along with the Warangal Super-Speciality Hospital, would be completed by December 9, 2027.

A dedicated director would be appointed for each hospital to oversee its functioning and ensure the institutions were managed on a par with corporate hospitals, Mr. Reddy said.

He also said doctors who put in additional time at government hospitals should be recognised and incentivised to encourage specialists to devote more quality time to patients in the public healthcare system.

Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha said MCR TIMS Sanathnagar was not merely a hospital but a major institution aimed at strengthening Telangana’s public healthcare system.

Built at a cost of ₹1,126 crore, the hospital has a built-up area of 11.68 lakh sq ft and 1,082 beds across 37 medical departments, including 300 ICU beds, 88 emergency beds, 30 dialysis beds, 400 general beds and 100 beds earmarked for medical tourism.

“MCR TIMS will be developed as a Centre of Excellence in cardiac, renal, transplant and trauma sciences. The facility would combine advanced infrastructure and technology with the expertise of specialist doctors and surgeons already working in the public sector,” Mr. Narasimha said.

He urged doctors, nurses and other staff at MCR TIMS to build a strong reputation for the institution by treating every patient with respect, responding promptly to emergencies and dealing with families with a humane approach.

“No patient should feel that they would not receive quality medical care simply because they have come to a government hospital,” he said.

Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said the government had been giving special attention to strengthening the public healthcare sector. He said the hospital, named after former Chief Minister Marri Chenna Reddy, would serve as a “modern temple of healthcare” and provide free medical services to lakhs in Telangana.

Mr. Vikramarka criticised the previous BRS government, saying only ₹70 crore had been spent on construction of the TIMS Sanathnagar Super-Speciality Hospital during its tenure.

The total construction cost of the hospital was around ₹1,126 crore, while the present government had already released ₹845 crore, he said. He said it was inappropriate for the previous government to claim credit for the entire project having spent only ₹70 crore.
