Three workers rescued from roof after winds bring down powerlines in Christchurch
Firefighters have rescued people trapped on a roof after strong winds brought down powerlines in Christchurch.
Fire and Emergency (FENZ) responded to six call-outs in the three hours from 11.30am for downed trees in Sockburn and trampolines flying into powerlines in Aranui and Burwood.
A fallen powerline left three workers stuck on the roof in Woolston for about 40 minutes just before 1pm.
After the power was cut the workers came down uninjured, FENZ said.
Wind also shattered a window at the bottom terminal of the Christchurch Gondola.
MetService said many parts Christchurch had recorded gusts of between 70km/h and 81km/h on Tuesday afternoon.
The strongest gust of 112km/h hit the Port Hills.
The wind was expected to ease over the course of the evening.
