Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that “those who try to harm the future of our youth will not be spared”. The Union government has decided to set up fast-track courts “to ensure swift and stringent punishment for those involved in paper leaks”, Modi added.

In response, the Cockroach Janta Party political campaign reiterated its demand that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan must resign over the alleged mismanagement of competitive examinations. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that the prime minister was the one “who has harmed the future of our youth the most”.

The Editors Guild said that biased reporting by media outlets cannot justify violence against journalists. The statement came after videos on social media showed reporters from television channels being attacked and heckled while covering the youth protests demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

One of the videos showed Times Now reporter Dev Kotak standing on a street in Delhi with his shirt torn, while a video from Delhi showed a crowd of protesters heckling a reporter from Zee Media. The perceived proximity of the media outlets to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party “can never be the justification” for attacks on its representatives, the Editors Guild said.

The press body also condemned police action against protesters, saying that using state power to suppress the right to dissent violates the freedom of expression. Read on.

The Delhi High Court has agreed to hear a public interest litigation seeking an inquiry by the National Investigation Agency into the youth protests in the national capital. The petition, filed by a former office bearer of the Hindutva organisation Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, has alleged that the demonstration was part of a “larger conspiracy” involving “external funding”.

The petition also referred to media reports about activist Sonam Wangchuk’s alleged links to foreign organisations and argued that these allegations should be investigated by the competent authorities. The matter will be heard on Friday.

Rescue teams recovered three more bodies from the site of a blast in a tunnel that was being constructed in Sikkim’s Namchi district, taking the death toll to 25. The four-day search and recovery operation has now concluded.
