Local media reported that the boy was walking with his father when he slipped and fell while crossing rocky terrain in the Tirol mountain range at 11am on Tuesday.
The pair were descending the Gänsekragen mountain after reaching the 2,914m (9,560ft) summit at 9.30am.
They were walking along a waymarked path towards a mountain hut in Winnebachsee when the accident happened about 500m below the summit as the boy rounded a corner.
The 46-year-old man managed to climb down the hillside to his son, who was lying unconscious, and raise the alarm. An air ambulance transported him to a clinic in Innsbruck, where he is being treated for serious injuries.
Police are investigating how the boy fell.
