Crater left by SpaceX rocket after it crashed into the moon at 5,400mph seen in new images

Before-and-after images show a new crater left on the surface of the moon after a SpaceX rocket crashed into it at 5,400mph.

On 5 August, the abandoned Falcon rocket made contact with the moon with a force of nearly three tonnes of dynamite, after drifting through space for more than a year. SpaceX said the impact was not intentional.

Scientists estimate that the fresh crater appears to be 60 feet (18 meters) across and less than 10 feet (3 meters) deep.

The photographs were taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, a Nasa probe that has been mapping the moon for 17 years.
