As the hotel marks its eighth anniversary, General Manager Mahesh Padala looks back at returning guests, changing food preferences and the growing appetite for weddings and conferences in Madurai
Some guests have been returning to Courtyard by Marriott Madurai for years, sometimes asking for the same room they stayed in during their previous visit.
For Mahesh Padala, General Manager of the hotel, such familiar faces are among the things that have marked its eight-year journey in Madurai.
Travellers today are more exposed to international standards of hospitality and dining. Even when they come to a smaller city, they expect good food, comfortable rooms, spacious surroundings and personalised service. They also expect things to happen quickly, he added.
He says that the changes are visible in the hotel’s dining spaces too. While visitors continue to look for Madurai’s local food, local diners are increasingly trying international cuisines, including pan-Asian options. Sunday brunches have also become popular.
The city’s celebrations have grown as well. He says weddings that once typically brought together 300 to 400 people are now becoming larger gatherings, with the hotel catering to celebrations of up to 800 or 1,000 guests.
But beyond the numbers, it is the people who have been part of the hotel’s eight-year journey who stand out. Around 25 employees have been with the property since it opened. Over the years, they have got to know returning guests and their preferences, making a familiar stay feel even more personal, he adds.
Some guests who visit Madurai every November and December for the temple have been returning for years, choosing the same hotel and, sometimes, the same room.
For Mahesh Padala, that sense of familiarity is what makes hospitality in Madurai special — personal, warm and homely.
As Courtyard by Marriott Madurai steps into its ninth year, the hotel plans to expand its food offerings with more festivals and introduce technology-led changes to the guest experience.
Eight years on, the familiar faces returning to the hotel may be the simplest measure of the journey it has made in Madurai. The eight-year milestone will be celebrated on Saturday at 7.30 p.m. at the Celebrations Hall in the hotel, with doctors, business leaders and industrialists from Madurai.
Located at Alagar Kovil Main Road, KK Nagar, Madurai.
