Charlie Hunnam is getting the Sons of Anarchy gang back together — but they’re playing themselves this time.
FX and Hulu ordered Hunnam’s “meta-thriller” spin-off of the hit motorcycle club show more than a decade after its final episode aired.
The limited series Legends — which has reportedly been in the works for three years — will reunite the original cast of Sons of Anarchy, including actors Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi. The cast will be playing fictionalized versions of themselves. Additional casting is expected to be announced later.
Hunnam, who played Jax Teller in the original series, will also star in Legends in addition to creating, developing and executive producing the series. Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter will not be involved in the new project, but showrunner Jonathan Groff recently joined the project.
An official description of the show from FX reads: “When the cast of Sons of Anarchy reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.”
“When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision,” Nick Grad, FX Entertainment president, said in a press release. “Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.”
A release date for Legends has not yet been announced. The Independent has reached out to FX for comment.
Since Sons of Anarchy’s series finale in 2014, several cast members have remained close and often reunite at fan conventions. Hunnam’s idea for the new show allows the original members of the series to be involved despite most of the major characters being killed off during the course of the hit show, which first premiered in 2008.
Sons of Anarchy ran for seven seasons and followed Hunnam’s character as a man who takes over a California biker club that was previously run by his father. The series was followed by the spin-off Mayans M.C.
