A seven-year-old from Tamil Nadu, who had been undergoing treatment for brain tumour at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) here and who went into brain stem death, has joined the list of young deceased organ donors in the State.

Litiksha, daughter of Prakash and Pon Sindhuja of Neelavittan post office street, Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, will forever live in the hearts of many in Keralam, for in her passing, she gave life and hope to several others.

Litiksha, who was undergoing treatment for brain tumour, had her first surgery three years ago. She was at SCTIMST, waiting for a second surgery, when she slipped into brain death on Thursday morning at 8 a.m. Even in their profound grief, her parents were willing to give away their daughter’s organs so that she will live through others.

The child’s liver, two kidneys, heart valves and two corneas were retrieved for donation. The liver and one of the kidneys were transplanted in two patients in KIMSHEALTH hospital, while the second kidney went to a patient at Medical Trust hospital, Ernakulam.

The heart valves were retrieved by SCTIMST for one of their patients, while the corneas were harvested by a team from the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology here.

All processes, right from brain death confirmation and certification, identifying and coordinating the recipients, organ harvesting and allocation, as well as all necessary procedures were coordinated and managed by Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation.

Litiksha is survived by her sister, Sreesakthi.

Health Minister K. Muraleedharan paid his respects to Litiksha and conveyed his condolences as well as gratitude to the parents whose courage and supreme sacrifice in their hour of grief had given life to others.
