“I deliberately wanted to be here on the days when Ukraine is celebrating the 35th anniversary of its independence, in order to once again demonstrate Germany’s continued support for Ukraine,” Wadephul said while speaking to reporters.
The German Foreign Minister noted that while Germany is in the midst of the holiday and vacation season, Ukraine continues to come under devastating attacks and strikes time and again.
“People here suffer every day – and not only at night – from constant, brutal Russian attacks, primarily targeting the civilian population. We see all this suffering, we see how this country is fighting, and we will continue to support it,” Wadephul emphasized.
According to the Minister, Ukraine continues to need support. He also stressed that measures must already be taken to prepare Ukraine and its infrastructure for the coming winter.
“As last winter showed, Putin primarily targeted Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, so together with my French colleague Jean-Noël Barrot, I wrote to many countries asking them to provide assistance and take appropriate measures so that Ukraine can get through the coming winter,” Wadephul said.
The German Foreign Minister also pointed to the importance of a united European position on Russia’s war against Ukraine.
“In my view, it is important for Europe to demonstrate in this situation that Putin will not achieve his goals here in Ukraine, that we will continue to support Ukraine, and that we are, of course, ready at any time to support and accompany Ukraine in its negotiations with Russia. However, for these negotiations to take place at all, we must continue to provide support to Ukraine,” Wadephul stressed.

He also expressed confidence that Ukraine would withstand Russia’s armed aggression and emphasized that Germany has now become Ukraine’s most important ally in terms of the volume of bilateral military, political and economic support and assistance.
“This will continue,” Wadephul assured.
In a post on X after arriving in the Ukrainian capital, Wadephul stressed that, amid even more brutal Russian attacks targeting Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, partners were working to help Ukraine prepare for winter.
“Putin is trying to wear down the people of Ukraine. But their society is resilient. We stand with them – this winter too. Putin will not achieve his goal,” the minister wrote.
As reported by Ukrinform, former Trump Special Envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg arrived in Ukraine on August 21. He was briefed on the operation of the country’s seaports and shown the consequences of Russian strikes on Odesa’s port infrastructure.
