SEOUL, July 24 (Yonhap) -- The number of laying hens and broiler chickens rose in the second quarter from a year earlier following an increase in chick placements at local farms, data showed Friday.

The total number of laying hens in the country was estimated at 78.98 million, up 1.6 percent from a year earlier, while the number of broilers rose 1 percent to 110.8 million, according to the Ministry of Data and Statistics.

The number of beef cattle, including the Korean native breed "hanwoo," came to 3.28 million, down 4.9 percent from a year earlier, due to a decline in the number of breeding cows.

The report showed the number of dairy cattle came to 365,000, also down 1.6 percent from a year earlier.

The number of pigs reached 10.65 million in the second quarter, down 2.2 percent from a year earlier.
