Marvel Studios and Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con go together like Reed and Sue. It’s just a perfect marriage. So, when the company decided to release the first teaser for its only release this year, Avengers: Doomsday, five days BEFORE the Hall H panel, we all thought the same thing. What the heck could Marvel have beyond that?
Well, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, along with the film’s directors Joe and Anthony Russo, not only brought out almost two dozen cast members, they played some exclusive footage from the film for the fans in attendance. Before that, though, there also was a cameo appearance by a person who sounded like Ryan Reynolds, in a grey, almost denim-looking Deadpool outfit, who joked about wanting to be in the movie. The Russos said the film had been shot but they’d be open to additional photography. Was that a confirmation Deadpool is in Doomsday? We think so.
As for the footage, it starts with a scene of Doctor Doom, in full costume, sitting on a golden throne. The ground is pulsing with green energy. “Victor was always the smartest guy in every room,” says Sue Storm. “He used to be different. Then everything he loved was taken from him.” He’s in front of the painting from the teaser poster. “I knew he was lost, but didn’t realize he was broken.” We see she’s giving this speech to, well, almost all the heroes, standing in a room.
We then fly over what looks like a completely destroyed city. Reed Richards asks, in an almost horrified tone, “Victor. Did you do this?” We see shots of several characters, including a crying Magneto, Charles Xavier, Steve Rogers with a baby, and others. “All of you have lived storied lives,” Victor says. “And now you must give them back.”
We watch Victor jump out of a building and fly down to the ground, nailing the superhero landing. Thor is there and jumps at Doom, swinging Stormbreaker. “I swear you’ll beg for Hell when I’m through with you,” he says. Victor stops him with a finger. Thor keeps pushing and pushing, but nothing happens. Then Victor flicks him back with green energy. “Hell answers to me,” Victor says as he raises a bunch of Sentinels out of the ground around him.
We’re sure there will be more from Marvel and Avengers: Doomsday next month at the D23 Expo but, for now, what do you think of this?
