‘Spicy’ from the start as Diamonds, Roses face off

Hi folks. I’m here at the Hydro in Glasgow, where our Aussie Diamonds are ready to take on the England Roses – in what many have dubbed a preview match for the gold medal.

The crowd is absolutely packed, and with under 10 minutes to go, spectators are still piling in.

There’s definitely an English majority here today, with many fans proudly wearing red and white merch.

Matthew Richardson went on holiday after winning bronze with the Australian men’s sprint at the 2024 Olympics in Paris and just never came back.

At least, that’s how former teammate Leigh Hoffman described Richardson’s controversial defection from Australia to England following the last Olympics, as the two prepare to face each other at the Commonwealth Games velodrome in Glasgow.

“We’d never experienced something like that before. You know, you grow up racing someone, and you think you’re both Aussie, but then he’s not,” Hoffman said.

English gymnast released from hospital after frightening fall

GLASGOW: English gymnast Gabriel Langton has been released from hospital after a frightening fall during the men’s team final at the Commonwealth Games on Friday.

The 18-year-old received extensive treatment before being stretchered from the arena after missing a grab during his high bar routine and landing on his head and neck.

“Gabriel was transferred to the hospital as a precautionary measure overnight and underwent multiple scans today, with very positive results,” England team management said in a statement on Saturday. “Thankfully, he has been cleared of any serious injury complications and will be discharged to return to the team hotel this evening.

“He is in good spirits and hugely grateful for the many messages of support and the excellent care provided by the medical teams. He is looking forward to being reunited with the team to celebrate his silver medal.”

Never too early for a Diamonds, Roses clash

The Diamonds and English Roses are used to facing each other deep into Commonwealth Games or World Cup tournaments.

By deep, I mean semi-finals or medal matches, but a quirk of this year’s schedule means they are facing off on the second day of the tournament in what should be a treat for fans after a one-sided opening day of the competition on Saturday AEST.

Australia beat Tonga 99-38 and England defeated Northern Ireland 83-34 in a sign of how sharp both squads are ahead of this match but it will be telling which side lifts their levels quickest as the tempo of this match will be several rungs higher than yesterday.

According to Netball Australia, this will be the Diamonds’ 50th match in the Commonwealth Games, which is a credit to the way the sport has gone from a demonstration sport in 1990 to one of the marquee events now.

Rising swimming star Flynn Southam has thrown down the gauntlet to Australian relay teammate Kyle Chalmers by declaring that he can beat the Dolphins veteran for the first time and that a fresh mindset has him convinced he can become the best in the world.

Amid Australia’s flurry of gold medals on the opening night of competition in Glasgow, Southam’s lead-off leg in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay had swimming fans salivating at the prospect of what he could achieve individually.

The 21-year-old slashed six 10ths of a second off his 100m freestyle personal best on Friday night, lowering it from 47.69 at last year’s Australian trials to 47.09.
