A policeman, attached to Tamil Nadu Special Police in Chennai, has been booked in connection with smuggling of banned tobacco goods by Alangulam police station near Rajapalayam on Saturday.

A team of police, led by Alangulam Sub-Inspector of Police C. Anandakumar, intercepted a two-wheeler near Jakkammalpuram.

Two persons, identified as V. Krishnamoorthi, 28, and P. Jeyakumar, 28, of Jakkammalpuram, were seen transporting a bag. Upon interrogation, the police found that they were illegally smuggling 80 pouches of two different brands of banned tobacco products.

During interrogation, the two persons had said that one Havildar in Chennai was supplying the contraband.

The duo used to sell the tobacco products to construction workers and fireworks workers and also supplied them to nearby shops. The police booked all three under the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 for selling intoxicating products under the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita.

While the two persons were arrested, the police are on the lookout for the third accused.
