Kimi Antonelli extended his lead over Lewis Hamilton to 50 points ahead of the mid-season break after the seven-time champion endured a frustrating weekend of penalties at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
World champion Lando Norris won his first race of the 2026 F1 season at the Hungarian Grand Prix but his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri saw a potential victory turn into a nightmare retirement due to a gearbox issue while Hamilton’s hopes of winning an eighth world championship took a blow.
Max Verstappen finished second while championship leader Antonelli rounded off the podium to extend his advantage over Hamilton, who also endured a frustrating weekend and dropped behind Charles Leclerc to fifth after he received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit-lane. Hamilton started fifth after he received a three-place grid penalty yesterday.
Norris, last season’s champion, started on pole for the first time this season but Piastri snatched the race lead on the opening lap. Piastri was still leading with 25 laps to go, but got in a tangle with back-marker Carlos Sainz and collided with the slower Williams car.
Piastri was understandably furious, but things went from bad to worse for the Australian as he retired from the race due to a technical issue.
