After spending almost a year dutifully wearing corsets during the filming – and promotion – of Wuthering Heights, Margot Robbie would be forgiven for never wanting to set eyes on an item of lingerie again.

Instead, it appears that the 36-year-old Australian actress has developed rather a taste for it – so much so that she's wearing it not just at bedtime, but during the day.

Shopping in Paris with her 69-year-old mother Sarie Kessler at the weekend, the Barbie star kept the city's 28C heat at bay by wearing a lace-trimmed silk camisole top and matching mini skirt in fashionable lemon.

The 'Loure' top, £310, and 'Giulietta' skirt, £330, are by Doen, a cult brand launched in 2016 by two Californian sisters. High-profile fans include Taylor Swift, Kylie Jenner and Bella Hadid.

And Ms Robbie is far from alone in her enthusiasm for wearing underwear as outerwear this summer.

If you have yet to take your summer holiday or set foot in an airport, don't be surprised if, upon boarding your flight, some of the female travellers look as though they're off to a pyjama party.

Improbable as it may seem to those who prefer their clothes to look like clothes rather than lingerie, satin shorts, slip dresses, silky cami-tops and lace-trimmed pyjama pants are among this season's biggest trends.

If you are scratching your head at how it came to pass that items more commonly worn in the bedroom have made their way on to the beach – not to mention your local shopping centre, supermarket or cafe –blame Anthony Vaccarello, creative director of Yves Saint Laurent.

Ever since dressing actress Zoe Kravitz, influencer Hailey Bieber and Grammy-winning singer Charli XCX in tiny lace-trimmed cami-shorts when they attended the Saint Laurent show in Paris last autumn, the trend has slowly been gaining momentum.

While few might be willing to spend an eye-watering £2,040 on the label's crepe silk iterations, where Saint Laurent leads, the High Street follows.

Which is why there's currently a glut of affordable silky, lacy lookalikes on sale in stores including Zara, H&M and M&S, in cheerful pastel colours such as lemon, pistachio and candyfloss pink. Yet clearly, this is not a look for the faint-hearted.

While it's prescriptive to put an upper age limit on any trend, those whose undie drawers lean more towards support pants and shapewear than satin shorts may want to sit this one out.

Alternatively, you could nod to the look by teaming a lace-trimmed cami-top with jeans and a blazer, or team a knee-length slip skirt with a cotton T-shirt.

There are other ways to keep cool than by wearing your lingerie to lunch, of course. But with the mercury set to rise again in the UK this week, this is one trend that's guaranteed to last well past bedtime.
