Magnitude 7.1 earthquake hits Japan's Kyushu region

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 has struck Japan's Kumamoto prefecture, the Japan Meteorological Agency says.

The earthquake may have maximum intensity of 7 on Japan's 1-7 scale in Kumamoto Prefecture.

A tsunami warning of 1 metre has been issued for Japan.
