A beachcomber made the gruesome discovery of legs and feet in October 2023.

The police could find no match to the DNA in missing persons data bases but eventually aid organisations notified Dutch authorities that two men from Afghanistan were missing. The Red Cross was able to collect samples from relatives and the police have now confirmed there was a match.

“With this DNA, it could be established that the body parts originated from two men aged 20 and 27 (in 2023), born in Afghanistan,” the police said in a statement.

No cause of death could be determined. The remains were buried in a city cemetery in Den Burg.

In 2014, the remains of a Syrian man, also thought to be trying to cross the Channel, washed up on Texel.
