General Hospital fans are adjusting to the fact that there’s a new Ethan Lovett in town.

The long-running soap has recast the fan favorite character after the departure of Nathan Dean, also known as Nathan Parsons.

Dean originated the character back in 2009, and played the role until 2012. He returned to play Lovett on several occasions since, and the character has also been portrayed by James Ryan.

On April 17, 2026, Dean returned to the role on a full-time basis. However, during an episode broadcast on Monday, July 27 a voiceover announced: “The role of Ethan Lovett is now being played by Christian Howard.”

Howard is a British-born actor previously best known for his martial arts work in productions such as the short film Street Fighter: Legacy.

Dean had previously hinted that his return to the popular soap opera might be cut short, telling TV Insider that the series initially asked him to commit to a three-year stint.

“I said, ‘I can’t do three years. There’s a lot going on in my personal life. I need to be home with my wife and all this stuff, so can’t do three years, can’t do two years,’” said Dean. “So, we agreed to do these next four months, see how it goes, and they have a pretty interesting little story lined up.”

On March 21, Dean announced on Instagram that his wife is expecting a child, writing in a Taco Bell-themed post: “We didn’t want to be cheesy, but we think this next chapter is going to be a Baja Blast! I'm so lucky and blessed to have this wonderful woman in my life. She made me whole. And I cant wait to see where this journey goes.”

Meanwhile, Howard — best known for his martial arts performances — has previously said he is seeking more dramatic and romantic work.

Speaking on the Entertainment Dudes – Los Angeles/Nashville podcast in 2023, Howard said: “I was doing a lot of action stuff…but then I started romantic comedy stuff, which is more fun. I had a skill set in action, which is also not going to last forever. Taking fight scenes takes a big toll on you.”

General Hospital first began airing 63 years ago and has a notable history of featuring unconventional stars, including rock musician Rick Springfield and Oscar-winning Elizabeth Taylor. The show has also recently enjoyed cameo appearances from late night host John Oliver.

The show continues to be broadcast on ABC and is available to stream on Hulu.
