Telangana Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has expressed concern over the impact of El Nino, stating that the rainfall deficit in the State stood at 30% in the ongoing monsoon.

Describing the rare climate event as a “natural calamity” not witnessed in the last 150 years, he said El Nino would have a severe impact on the State during August, September and October.

Speaking to the media after participating in a ‘face-to-face interaction with people’ at Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad on Wednesday (July 29, 2026), the Minister said the State government was taking all necessary steps to create awareness among people in every village about the anticipated adverse impact of El Nino.

Stating that all government departments are working in coordination to mitigate the impact, he said that the government is encouraging farmers to take up less water-intensive crops and added that farmers were showing interest in cultivating oil palm.

Referring to people visiting Gandhi Bhavan with their grievances, Mr. Rao said the petitions were being forwarded to district Collectors and officials concerned, with regular follow-ups being undertaken to ensure their early resolution.

Hailing the face-to-face programme, the minister said no other political party conducted such programme aimed at addressing people’s issues.
