Communist Party of India (CPI) State Secretary G. Eswaraiah demanded stringent action against police personnel allegedly responsible for the death of a man in Tirupati district, claiming that the incident amounted to a custodial killing.

In a press release on Wednesday, Mr. Eswaraiah alleged that Subramanyam, a resident of Rayalacheruvu village in Ramachandrapuram mandal, ended his life after being subjected to police harassment and physical assault.

According to the CPI leader, the incident stemmed from a minor dispute between Subramanyam and his neighbour, Jana Sena Party (JSP) mandal president Sanjeevani Hari, over water stagnation in front of their houses. Following a complaint lodged by Hari, police reportedly reached the village, assaulted Subramanyam in public, abused him and took him to the police station.

Describing the incident as ‘nothing short of a police killing’, Mr. Eswaraiah said the actions of the police were unacceptable and would further erode public confidence in the law enforcement system.

He alleged that the police were increasingly acting in favour of ruling party leaders instead of protecting ordinary citizens and maintaining law and order. The CPI leader demanded the immediate suspension of the Sub-Inspector and Head Constable allegedly involved in the assault, initiation of departmental and criminal proceedings against them, and a comprehensive inquiry into the incident.

Mr. Eswaraiah also sought adequate compensation for the bereaved family and urged the government to ensure justice for the victim.
