Ahead of the Aadi Perukku festival on August 3, the Tiruchi Corporation has launched a special cleanliness drive at the Amma Mandapam bathing ghat in Srirangam.

During the special cleaning operation, which began on Sunday, about 8 tonnes of waste was cleared from the ghat. The waste, consisting largely of discarded clothes and puja material, was segregated and disposed of. Around 50 sanitation workers had been engaged in the cleanup at Amma Mandapam while 15 to 20 workers have been deployed at other bathing ghats.

To maintain cleanliness throughout the festival, large garbage bins had been positioned across the bathing ghat, with tipper lorries kept on standby for continuous waste collection. A total of 94 sanitation workers, working in three shifts under the supervision of 12 inspectors, will oversee sanitation. Two medical teams have been stationed at the venue to provide immediate medical assistance if required.

A total of 54 toilets, 26 for men and 28 for women, at four locations have been repaired and made available. Separate shower facilities, with 40 shower units, and 10 changing rooms for women have been provided. Drinking water arrangements had been made at three locations with 18 tap points and five 1,000-litre PVC storage tanks.

The Corporation has installed additional lighting, including two high-mast lights, 50 tubelights, and 10 focus lights. Public address systems had been set up at three locations to relay safety instructions and festival announcements while awareness signboards had been placed at key points.

Similar arrangements, including drinking water, lighting, public address systems, and safety barricades, had been made at other major bathing ghats in the city, including Garudamandapam, Veereswaram, Geethapuram, Odatthurai, Thillainayagam, Gandhi, S.S. Kovil and Ayyalamman ghats.

A senior Corporation official said steps had been put in place to ensure devotees can celebrate Aadi Perukku in a clean and safe environment.
