The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a search operation at a pressure cooker manufacturing unit at Peelamedu in the city on July 30, and seized around 250 pressure cookers worth around ₹4.5 lakh allegedly bearing the ISI standard mark without a valid BIS licence.

The operation was carried out at Ponmani Industries, located on Codissia Road, based on information regarding suspected violations of the provisions of BIS Act, 2016. The search was conducted by a BIS enforcement team led by Vinith Kumar G., Scientist E and Director, and Gautam Chand Soni, Scientist E and Deputy Director.

According to BIS, the unit was found to be manufacturing, storing and selling pressure cookers displaying the ISI mark without authorisation.

Ramesh K., Director and Head of the BIS Coimbatore Branch office, said that action would be initiated against the manufacturer under the provisions of the BIS Act,2016. He noted that under Section 28 of the Act, misuse of the BIS standard mark is punishable with imprisonment of up to two years and a fine of not less than ₹2 lakh, which may extend up to 10 times the value of the goods involved, or both, for a first offence.

BIS said that pressure cookers are safety-critical household products and warned that uncertified or substandard products could pose serious risks to consumers. It advised the public to purchase only pressure cookers carrying a genuine ISI mark, the relevant Indian Standard number and a valid CM/L licence number, which can be verified through the BIS CARE App.

The Bureau also urged manufactures and suppliers to comply with the BIS Act, 2016, and applicable Quality Controls orders, stating that violations would attract legal action. Consumers have been encouraged to report suspected misuse of the ISI mark or complaints relating to BIS-certified products to the nearest BIS office or through the BIS Care App.
